How to Open a Dutch Bank Account

Opening a bank account in the Netherlands is an essential step for both individuals and businesses looking to operate within the Dutch financial system. Whether you’re establishing a new B.V. (private limited company) or need a personal account, understanding the requirements and process can help streamline the setup.

At TaxGate, we guide individuals and businesses through every stage of establishing a foothold in the Netherlands, including navigating the banking landscape.

For Individuals

If you are an individual relocating to the Netherlands or planning to open a personal bank account, the process typically involves the following steps:

1. Choose a Bank

Dutch banks such as ING, ABN AMRO, and Rabobank are popular choices. Many international banks also have branches in the Netherlands.

2. Gather the Necessary Documents

To open an account, you will generally need:

  • A valid ID or passport.
  • Proof of address in the Netherlands (e.g., a rental contract or utility bill).
  • A BSN (Burgerservicenummer), which is issued when you register with your local municipality.

3. Visit the Bank

Most banks require an in-person appointment for account setup. Some banks may allow you to initiate the process online, but identification must usually be verified at a branch.

For Businesses (Including Dutch B.V.s)

Opening a corporate bank account for your Dutch B.V. is a crucial step to start operating your business. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Requirements for a Corporate Bank Account

To open a business bank account, you will typically need:

  • A valid ID or passport for the B.V.’s representative(s).
  • A Chamber of Commerce (KvK) registration extract for the B.V.
  • Proof of the company’s registered address.
  • Additional documents such as the B.V.’s Articles of Association.

2. In-Person Identification

To open a bank account for the B.V., the bigger Dutch banks require that the B.V.’s representative(s) identify themselves at one of their Dutch desks.

3. Potential Challenges

Please note that these banks may eventually not cooperate if the client has no Dutch ties besides its incorporation and registered address. However, this is assessed by the banks on a case-by-case basis.

4. Alternatives

If a Dutch bank account is not approved, alternatives may include:

  • Smaller Dutch or foreign banks.
  • Hiring a (nominal) Dutch resident director, for which we can provide guidance.
